Practice a scholarly reading technique. Choose ONE of the following activities to complete for this journal, based on strategies covered in the readings:
Project:
OPTION 1: SOURCE ANNOTATION
Choose one of the scholarly articles you plan to use for your project. Mark it up (annotate) as you read, using strategies either from the “Reading Stategies” essay (such as the Says/Does approach) or from the “Critical Reading Practice: Annotating a Source” text.
Post a copy, picture, or scan of your annotated article.
OPTION 2: SOURCE EVALUATION
The library readings on Source Evaluation (I & II) pose a series of questions for you to think about when choosing your sources. Choose one of source you plan to use for your annotated bibliography and, go through the process of answering these questions in writing.
1. What is the research question ( of the article) ?
2. Why is this a significant question?
3. What research methods are used to answer this question?
4. What theories are tested or used in research?
5. What is the most important evidence or data?
6. What are the inferences the article draws from this evidence? What interpretations of the evidence are provided?
7. What are the limitations to these inferences or alternative interpretations of the evidence?
8. What can you find out about the author?
9. What can you find out about the journal?
10. Was the article published in a reputable journal? (How can you tell?)
11. Is the article important to other scholars? (How can you tell?)
12. Do any of the sources cited in the article seem interesting or worth looking at? How could you find them?
13. Is there anything else you found out or would like to find out about this article?
14. What do you know about the context? How could you find out more?
I am writing on the topic of the role of civil engineering on environmental sustainability.
Because I want to find out how adopting eco-friendly materials, methods and design can assist in reducing the effectsof infrastructure projects on the environment.
In order toestablish the critical role played by civil engineers in building greener and sustainable communities in the contemporary society.
And the potential practical application would be using renewable orrecycled resources, as well as using resources effectively to ultimatelycombat the high rate of global greenhouse gas emission due toinfrastructure projects such as buildings, transport, and power plants
The scholarly article I chose is Sustainability of Civil Structures through the Application of Smart Materials: A Review .The article will be of interest to a wider audience because it provide relevant knowledge on the role civil engineers have in promoting environmental sustainability. The article shows how the civil engineers need to employ modern technology to promote environmental sustainability. The technology involves the deployment of smart materials in civil engineering structures. The structures already contribute to a considerable amount of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. The emission show the need for urgency to control the emissions by implementing measures that need to be taken to reduce the emissions
The article adds knowledge on the use of smart materials in the field of engineering. The use of smart materials develops the knowledge in sustainable constructions with enhanced structural performance. Civil engineers acquires the knowledge to using the materials in their work to enhance environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the article describes what should be the smart materials in the civil engineering. Categories of smart materials are depicted in the article.
Categories of Smart Materials
These materials have advantageous features that have unique behaviors and properties. Such features are Shape Memory Effect and pseudoelasticity. Shape Memory allows are in this category and are capable of regaining their shape after subjection to deformations. Another type of SMMs are the shape memory polymers that are activated by heat stimulation, magnetic fields and light.
These materials are compounds that display different behaviors of piezoelectricity. These materials produce an electric current when exposed to stress or strain. The materials provide more sustainable construction constituents by dissipating energy from structural deformations and disturbances. Hence energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions decrease significantly.
Relationship of the Article and Research Topic
The article is relevant to my topic of research- role of civil engineering in environmental sustainability- since it shows the knowledge civil engineers should deploy in their work. Civil engineering is obligated to use sustainable materials in constructions to make more environmental-friendly structures.
