Research Project (100 points)

This project will be your creation. You will need to determine the topic based on your interests and
personal sense of justice. Potential topics include: global warming, environmental racism, dioxin, PVC,
lead, toxic waste, medical waste, pesticides, population pressures, endangered species, biotechnology,
GMOs, ecocide, war and pollution, factory farming, animal rights, etc. The research paper should
provide specific information on the issue of environmental justice, discuss attempts to remedy the
problem, evaluate the success of current efforts, and propose further action to alleviate the
environmental harm
Research projects may be based on library research or research derived from involvement with a
community project addressing environmental issues. All research papers should include the information
on the local organization cited in the group issues presentation. Either approach requires a 10-15 page
paper.
Library research papers require students to analyze a broad range of information on an issue, exploring
and incorporating what others have written. Library research requires at least twenty outside
sources, ten of which must be academic. A maximum of five sources may be websites. Papers
should be submitted in APA format.
The research project may also be based on involvement in a community project that addresses
environmental justice issues. The primary source of information for this type of project is gathered from
those you are working with, and from the knowledge gained from active involvement. Community-
based projects should also include five interviews and ten outside sources, at least five of which are
academic.
Both types of research projects should include a complete discussion of the environmental problem, a
clarification of the justice issues, an analysis of the existing remedies, and your own plan of action for
resolving the injustice.
